Actress, Chief Director of Theatre “Sovremennik”
Galina Volchek (December 19 1933, Moscow, Russia) is a film and stage actress, director. She attended Moscow Art Theatre School and graduated in 1995. She along with several other actors organized a Young Actors Studio, which later changed name to “Sovremennik” aka “Contemporary”. Volchek became its chief and artistic director and is holding these positions up to this day. She has been married twice and has a son Denis Evstigneev.

Galina Volchek became the first Soviet film director that broke cultural embargo between the US and the USSR. "Contemporary" toured in New York, in 1996 and 1997. For the first time after the tour of famous Moscow Art Theatre, which was hed in 1924, the Russian troupe was playing on Broadway. "Three Sisters" and "The Cherry Orchard" by Chekhov and "Steep Route" Eugenia Ginzburg taken American audiences with great success. Broadway tour "Contemporary" were marked by one of the most prestigious national awards in the U.S. Dramatic Theatre – “Drama desk award”, which is the first time in a long history of existence of this prize was awarded to non-US theater, besides an absolute majority.
